What are Speech, Language and Communication needs?
Speech, Language and Communication Needs are difficulties with listening, understanding and communicating with others. Children may have difficulty with only one of these skills or several – every child with SLCN is different (Afasic, 2020).
Support Groups & Information:
- The Communication Trust is a coalition of over 50 not-for-profit organisations. Working together we support everyone who works with children and young people in England to support their speech, language and communication. The Communication Trust newsletters
- Afasic supports parents with children who have difficulties talking and understanding language.
- Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate.
- Stammering supports those who stammer in the UK.
- The Speech, Language and Communication needs team helps children and young people with different levels of need.
- Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Service – offers a child- and family-centred approach to support CYP with SLCN, working in partnership with parents, carers, health and education professionals.
- Elklan writes and delivers accredited courses for education and other staff working with those with speech, language and communication needs and for parents, and trains a network of licenced tutors to deliver Elklan courses locally.
